The Library provides Cataloguing-In-Publication (CIP) data for new publications. The CIP is a voluntary programme of co-operation between publishers and libraries. It enables the cataloguing of books before they are published, and the prompt distribution of this cataloguing information to booksellers and libraries.
The CIP record is provided to the publisher free of charge. This transaction usually takes about seven days.
An all too frequent problem with CIP is when publishers change bibliographic details, such as the wording of a title, after receiving the CIP data. The CIP data as published in the item will be incorrect and not reusable by subsequent cataloguing agencies and if a pre-publication record has been entered onto a database it can be difficult to locate and edit to match the details on the item itself.
