National Library of Jamaica: Labour Day 2010

 

Introduction

Labour Day 2010 will focus on children, and has the slogan, 'Our Children Show Them We Care'.

Activities planned for the week include the official launch of, Workers' Week with a Thanksgiving Services in each parish (May 16), planned Labour Day activities and the Labour Day concert at the end of the "work day" on May 24 at Emancipation Park beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon. Olivia Grange, said that the theme for Labour Day 2010 is timely and most appropriate considering "all the issues that have affected our children in recent times."

She said that it was important that emphasis be placed in this area and people are encouraged to demonstrate care and support for the children.

According to the Minister, Labour Day which falls on Sunday, May 23, this year, will be observed on Monday, May 24, in keeping with regulations regarding the observance of Public Holidays.

Miss Grange, who is also Chairman of the Labour Day Committee, said that workers of Jamaica will be recognised for their contribution to nation building during Workers' Week.Special emphasis will also be placed this year on Sam Sharpe and his contribution to the labour movement in Jamaica.
