INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS

Celebrations began as early as July 30, 1962. On August 6, there were two military tributes. There was a gun salute by the ships of the Commonwealth and the United States Navies in the Kingston Harbor. Additionally, The Jamaica Squadron of the Royal Air Force staged a fly past over the corporate area. A major feature of the Independence Day celebrations was the swearing in of Sir. Kenneth Blackburne, as Governor General. In addition to all these, there were fireworks displays, street dancing, and even Norman Manley and his wife were seen dancing on the back of a truck.
